KERALA HISTORICAL MONUMENTS, KERALA PILGRIMS AND MONUMENTS

LAND MARK OF KERALA 
Kerala’s artistry can be seen in the buildings and monuments across the state which is always breathe taking ballads in stone and wood. It is really designed with scientific principles, mathematical analysis and which meets the functional design, and artistic image converges with faultless craftsmanship. Kerala’s rich and memorable cultural past makes the state a unique place to visit. The monuments of Kerala include temples, Churches, mosques, forts, palaces, houses and Mansions.

Guruvayoor Temple
The most important religious monuments in South India and is dedicated to Lord Krishna. The Mythical story of temple leads to 5000 years of old and evokes a great devotion and a sense of satisfaction in every visit. The temple in Kerala is known to have played host to maximum number of marriage and rice feeding ceremonies. The temple is having 42 elephant fleet to perform daily ‘Pujas’ and which is the largest group of elephant in the world named ‘Anakkottil’ and which is a spectacular view indeed.

Sabrimala Temple, Pathanamthitta
Unlike the Guruvayoor  Temple , which only Hindus are allowed, the Sabarimala Temple open to all religion for ‘darsan’ but with strict rules have to be followed in order to enter through holy steps to sanctum sanctorum. The temple is situated in a hill top of 950 m surrounded by dens forest and the journey is ended in a uphill trek that many pilgrims tackle barefoot.

Vadackumnathan Temple, Trissur.
The Shiva temple with its lofty stone walls and majestic gopurams is the site of Kerala’s most spectacular festival, the Trissur Pooram. The beautiful festival of lights, crakers, Elephant procession is the largest in Kerala falls in the month of April- May. The beautiful Koothambalam  (temple amphitheatre) is a striking feature of the temple.

Aranmula   Sree Parthasarathy Temple, Aranmula, Pathanamthitta
Located in Pathanmthitta dist, the main deity in the temple is Lord Krishna. The historical ‘gopura’ and the construction of temple are sharing the extravaganza in the art of Mahabharatha era. The annual boat race is one of the lasting memories for any human being once is there.
Sree Padmanabha Swamy Temple,Thiruvananthapuram.

The majestic SreePadmabha Swami temple in Thiruvananthapuram build by the Maharaja of Travancore in 1733 with a seven tier Gropuram.  The temple has a corridor of with 365 and one quarter sculptured   granite stone pillars with elaborate carvings. The elsewhere Travancore Rajas dedicated the kingdom to SreePadmanabha Swami or Perumal or Lord Vishnu and the Sanctum sanctorum an idol of Vishnu is depicted in reclining position over the serpent Anantha or Adisesha. The British Government saluted the Lord with a 21 gun salute, a military tradition of colonial days which was continued of Indian Army until the abolition by Govt. of India in recent years.
   
Mannarsala   Nagraja  Temple, Haripad, Alapuzha
Is very ancient and internationally known centre for the devoted of serpent god or Nagaraja. The temple is nestled in a forest grade and the temple is having over 30,000 images of snakes along the paths and among the trees, and is the largest such temple in the world. Women seeking fertility come to worship here, and upon the birth of their child come to hold thanks giving ceremonies here, often bringing new snake’s images as offerings. It is situated in Haripad, Alapuzha Dist.

Kodumon Chilanthy Temple, Pathanamthitta
Near Pathanamthitta , is very  famous in the special ritual for curing skin disease, besides this historical place blessed with the birth place of Shakthibhadra, author of Acharya Choodamony.

Kottukal Rock cut Temple, Anchal, Kollam
Situated in the eastern part of Kollam is ideal example of rock cut temple.

Kurisumala, Kannur
3 km away from Vazhikkadavu, Kannur, is a Christian pilgrim centre having unique style of faith practices by carrying big or small wooden holy cross to the hilltop. The road to kurisumala   offer some real sight seeing opportunities including European model house, lake, etc.

Lokanarkavu   Temple ,  Kozhikodu
The candid rural sand carvings here are delightful and associated with heroes of Kadathanattu , or Vadakkanpattu.

Monuments
Seven and Half Churches (Ezharapallikal)
St. Thomas, the apostle, after landing at Kodungalloor in A D 52, established seven and half churches or Christian Communities in Kerala.

Palayoor Church is the part of Dioceses of Trissur and 28 km away from Trissur. Palayar was the strong hold of Nanbudiri Brahmins (upper class of Indian Communities) when St. Thomas arrived there, and the same community baptized to Christianity. Besides Israelites had settlement at Palayar 2000 year ago and the ruins of ancient Synagogue are still seen outside of Brahmin Temple.

St. Thomas Church
is believed the first Christian church is India. At Kodungalloor, he established Church by the help of local people and the king in AD 52.

Kokkamangalam Church-is established in a village near Alapuzha Dist by St.Thomas considered one of the seven Christian Communities in Kerala.

Niranam Valiyapally    -is a parish under the Niranam diocese of Malankara Orthadox Syrian Church and founded by St. Thomas in AD. 54.

Malayattoor Church-is situated atop the 609 m high hill near Kurishumudi , Westernghats girdled  partially  by river periyar. The church has a life size statue of St. Thomas and the imprint of the feet of the apostle on a rock.

Kottakavu  Church - is situated near North Paravur established by St. Thomas in AD 55 now governed by Diocese of Ernakulam , Angamaly.

Kollam  kappal Palli -is a parish established in the Venad Kingdom of Kerala by St. Thomas in AD. 55.

Thiruvithamkode Church - is constructed in A D 56 by St. Thomas in Kannyakumary Dist. Thamilnadu State of India.

Cheraman Juma Masjid, Kodungalloor
It is the Oldest masjid or mosque in the Indian Subcontinent and second oldest one in the world built in 628 AD  (in Al-Hijra 7) which means that the construction was done just seven years after prophet Mohammed migrated to Medina. The architected style of mosque is typical Hindu style because the king of Kodungallur converted in to Islam and married to the sister of Jeddah king of Middle East.

CSI Church, Kozhikodu,
The church was built in 1842 by the German Basel mission, and the beautiful movement displays an aesthetic mix of European and Kerala style architecture.

Santa Cruz Basilica, Fort Kochi,
Built by Portuguese in 1506, and the demolished and rebuilt by the British in next century is a fabulous murals adorn the wooden ceiling and ornate sculptures and carvings decorate every façade.

Hill Palace, Museum, Ernakulam
Built in 18th century becomes  a heritage centre of Kerala displays all sorts of royal relies including the throne, royal furniture, coins, antiques from China and Japan.

Arakkal Palace & St. Angelo’s Fort
Constructed in 15th century by Portuguese called don Francisco De Almeida, now turned as a national heritage by Archeological survey of India.

St. Sebastian Church of Arthungal, Alapuzha

Built by Portuguese in 200 years back is a holy worship place for Christian community across the globe.
