Kovalam was a Ideal beach destination. This small beach is the focus of a very big money which attracts thousands of tourists. Kovalam was brought to the public eye by the Maharaja of Travancore. Over the past three decades, the place has been well developed, and now figures prominently on the world tourism map. Kovalam is just 16 kms away from Trivandrum.Now Kovalam beach is known as the "Paradise of the South.

The scenic beauty and serenity is supplemented by the availability of excellent accommodation. There are a lot of restaurants which provide multicusine food. The grilled seafood items such as lobster, king prawns and kalamari are caughtfresh from the sea at Kovalam. The crescent-shaped beach has three parts. The southernmost beach, and the most popular, is light house beach. It offers an amazing sight of Vizhinjam mosque. Lighthouse Beach: The southern extension of Kovalam is called the Lighthouse Beach, for its 35 metre high lighthouse, which towers over it atop Kurumkal hillock. This is the point where most tourists prefer to pass their quality time. Several temporary eateries and huts turn up during the peak vacation periods

Hawah Beach : Hawah Beach is the second largest beach in Kovalam. Offering picturesque views, this beach is the perfect place to see fishermen catching the fishes.

Samudra Beach : The northern part of the beach is known as Samudra Beach in tourism terminology. A large headland separates this part from the southern side. The local fishermen ply their trade on this part. The tranquil Arabian Sea stretches a long way and the tourists can laze around in the cool breeze pervading the place. This open beach is an ideal spot for swimming and bathing. The state's large sediments of the thorium-bearing mineral monazite, obtained in the sandy beaches of Quilon district, are proved to be very advantageous in our national atomic research and energy programmes.

By Air -
Trivandrum Airport (16 km) is the nearest airport from Kovalam, which has direct flights to all the major cities in India.

By Rail - Trivandrum Central Station is the nearest railway station, which is connected to all the important rail junctions in the country.

By Road - A good network of roads connect Kovalam with the main cities of Kerala. State buses and Inter State buses have regular services.

Kovalam truly captures the essence of  the capital city of Kerala. Kovalam is a well-known beach town situated near Thiruvananthapuram (erstwhile Trivandrum). The town stands facing the might Arabian Sea. The beach is not very far from the main city of Thiruvananthapuram; 16 km is all it takes for you to reach the picturesque beach of Kovalam from the city center.

The three beaches run alongside each other and cover around 17km of the coast line. Separating the three beaches are mighty rocks. Lighthouse Beach: The Lighthouse Beach is the southern extension of the three beach town of Kovalam. The beach is thus named for the 35 meter high tower perched atop the Kurumkal hillocks. The beach is very tranquil and presents the perfect spot to spend some quality time together. Several temporary eateries and shacks turn up along the during the peak tourist period.

Samudra Beach: The northernmost beach is known as the Samudra Beach. A large headland of palms separates the beach from the southern side. The restful Arabian Sea stretches a long way and the tourists can have some leisure times enjoying the cool breeze blowing across. The beach is ideal for swimming and bathing activities. The tourists are mildly populated and local fishermen carry on with their usual activities. The sands are partially black due to the presence of thorium-bearing minerals.

Other Attractions: The Vizhinzam Mosque on the Lighthouse beach is a popular tourist attraction. Nearest tourist spots that are worth checking out includes the Palaruvi Falls, Trivandrum, Kollam, Thekkady and Varkala. Taking long walks with your spouse beneath the swaying coconut palms, sunbathing and trying out exotic seafood are some of the activities for couples. Lush green vegetation and the gentle swoosh of the boat over the sparkling backwaters is an innovative way to explore the place.
