Kasaragod district lies on the North Western coast of the state. The name, Kasaragod, is said to be derived from the word Kusirakood meaning Nuxvomica forests (Kanjirakuttom). The district played a prominent role in the National movement for the freedom of the country. It is with the intention of bestowing maximum attention on the development of the backward areas that Kasaragod district was formed on 24th May 1984.
