 Alappuzha (Allepey) -"Venice of the East"


Alappuzha is quite popularly known as the "venice of the East". It has always remained the first choice for tourists visiting South India. Abundant with serene lakes and lagoons, with Alappuzha makes for a comelling visit for any travel freak. If our are a nature enthusiast, you will love everything about Alappuzha. It also includes stunning beaches, Karmadikkuttan and the Champakulam. A number of churches, temples and mosques adorn this town. Another interesting fact about Alappuzha is the boat races which are being held every year between July and September, marking the start of the harvest season. Among them, the Nehru Trophy Boat Race is the most famous one held in the month of August. Alappuzha is also famous for its fish delicacies. Sea food is the prime diet of the people here. The whohle town is quite small only, but its attractions are endless.

What to see Alappuzha (Allepey)

Champakulam Church - It is one of the oldest churches in Kerala, the St. Mary's Church is believed to be one of the seven established by St. Thomas. The annual feast at this church falls on the 3rd Sunday of October every year. The feast of St Joseph is celebrated on March 19th.

Kuttanad - Kuttanad, called the rice bowl of Kerala because of her wealth of paddy crops, is at the very heart of the backwaters.

Alappuzha Beach- This is one of the most popular picnic spots in Alppuzha. The pier, which extends into the sea here, is over 137 years old. Entertainment facilities at the Vijaya Beach Park add to the attractions of the beach.

Sea View Park - The park offers boating facilities and a swimming pool.

Mannarasala Sree Nagaraja Temple - This is a serpent shrine under the patronage of a brahman family, headed by a priestess. It is located near Harippad. The ancient shrine is an internationally well-known pilgrim centre dedicated to the Serpent God Nagaraja.

Arthunkal (22km North of Alappuzha) - The St. Sebastian's Church here is an important Christian pilgrim centre. Annual festival: Arthunkal Perunnal - the feast of the patron saint (January).

Karumadikuttan (3km East of Ambalapuzha) - A lots of attractive legends are associated with this 11th century statue of Lord Buddha.

How to reach at Alappuzha (Allepey)

By Air - Cochin is the nearest is airport i.e. 64kms, its and international airport so well connected to the other major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad etc. Another option is Trivandrum airport i.e. 159 km south of Alleppey.

By Rail - Alleppy Railway Station connected by rail with Cochin and Trivandraum.

By Road - Well connected by road (NH-47) / Trivandrum Alleppey:160 km / Cochin - Alleppy:70km.

By Water - Connected with Cochin (51/2 hrs) / Quilon (8 hrs) / Kottayam (21/2 hrs)
