Palaruvi Waterfalls
One of the most resplendent waterfalls located in an eco tourism location in Kollam District, the Palaruvi water fall is managed by the Palaruvi Vana Samrakhana Samithi (VSS) under the Thenmala Forest Development Agency. It falls from a height of 80 m,in cascades of milky spray.Palaruvi means “stream of milk” in the colloquial language of Kerala, that is Malayalam. The falls together with the surrounding mountains and their rich diverse vegetation presents an unparalleled enchanting scenic experience to the visitor. It is so refreshing that one cannot resist the temptation of having a body-massage in its showers, a divine experience of rebirth. The falls, which is a memorable experience, is visited by one lakh people every year.It is one of the highest water falls in the country.
History
Palaruvi had been the holiday retreat of the Maharaja of Travancore until owing to some alleged ill-omen, the retreat was shifted to Quartalam. The remnants of resting places,the Kalmandapams, chariot-shed, horse-stable etc., are still available.Behind the falls, the Maharaja developed a 200 acre coffee estate, known as Rajathottam, for bringing himself close to Palaruvi. Those were the golden years of Palaruvi when it had unveiled its beauty only to a favoured few.
